Bhai tika

The last day of Tihar is Bhai tika. On this day brother and sister put tika on each others forhead along with garland sewn with makhamali mala wishing for longetivity of each others life. Makhamali mala is said be be never get withered. Tika consists of five colors called as pancha rangi tika: Red, green, blue, yellow and white. Sister offers brothers shaguns of fruits like walnut, hazelnut or katus, fruits and sweets, clothes and in return the brothers give their sisters money. Those without any sisters go to Rani Pokhari Temple Kathmandu and put tika on the forhead. This is the only day Rani Pokhari is open.

How tihar is believed to be started?
It is believed that while performing bhai tika the messenger of Yama Raj came to take life of the brother and sister requested the messenger to wait until she completes the brother worship or bhai tika. The messenger said ok and she requested to sit along with her brother and worshipped messenger too by honoring him as a brother. The messenger was very happy and wanted to gift the sister. The sister in turn asked the long life of the brother and messenger agreed. In this way bhai tika saved life of the brother.

Additionally, there is another story relating to how Tihar started. In the five days of tihar Yama Raj has a holiday. Lord Vishnu gave the bon of ruling the three worlds for five days to Bali Raja. Lord Bishnu tricked Bali to go to a lonely dark world for his meritorious act that had shacked the heaven of a lord Indra. Beside ruling all three hindu worlds for five days Lord Vishnu agreed to guard Bali Raja for four months. Among the three worlds of Hindu, yamalok is also one of them so Yamaraj went to his sister. Yamaraj sister was so happy to see yamaraj after very long time and she welcomed him. She was happy and she pleased Yamaraj for five days. She worshipped her brother and set a tradition to worship as bhai tika.
